With double World Championship crowns in both 2000 and 2001, Ferrari followed proven and successful design philosophy while developing its F2002 challenger. Once again, the Scuderia optimised the car's aerodynamic efficiency, lowered the centre of gravity and created the optimum weight distribution and suspension geometry to maximise the performance of the engine and the Bridgestone tyres. |
Despite the continuity of the FIA regulations and the superficial similarities to the 2001, all aspects of the F2002 car were completely redesigned and the chassis was all-new, in terms of its design and construction, resulting in a weight reduction and greater structural integrity. The side pods, radiators, exhausts and the rear of the car were also completely new, achieving an improvement in both the engine and gearbox cooling and aerodynamic performance. The power-steering was operated mechanically rather than electronically. Both front and rear suspensions were revised with particular attention paid to optimising the aerodynamics. |
On track, the F2002's results were simply sensational - scoring 15 victories in 17 events. Michael Schumacher finished race on the podium and scored 11 victories on the way to claiming another Drivers crown. Team mate Rubens Barrichello won four races and took a further podium six places to be runner-up. And, of course, the team retained its Constructor's crown for the third year. |
