Since Audi's have started popping up all over the show with LED Daytime Running Lights, I have wanted to fit something similar to my Rover 800!

I already have PIAA LED Side lights, PIAA Headlight bulbs, and PIAA additional LED side lights fitted, (Plus the side indicators have been wired up as LED side marker lights!) but now was the time for some LED Strip lights for Daytime use! This is what comes of visiting Blackpool Illuminations so often as a child! :)

Daytime Running Lights will soon be compulsory on all new cars in the UK anyway from 2011. So rather than more and more new cars coming out with LED lighting, making my own car look even older! I decided I would try and stay ahead of the pack by updating the already advanced lighting I have on the front end of my coupe with some form of LED strip lights.

Not all new cars that come out will use LED Daytime Running Lights, some will just use bulbs for their Daytime Running Lights, which I suppose will be wired similar to Dim Dips but without the need to put on rear and interior lighting for daytime use.

Anyway with most modern cars coming out now, the headlight lenses are clear and so when the LEDs are fitted inside the headlights it gives a very clean look indeed. They may not look quite as good in older cars with the lens in the glass like the Rover 800 has, and so I decided against fitting them within the lights (but never say never!).

I decided instead, that I would like some fitted just under the front bumper, which is where they seem to be appearing on a few Porsche's, etc. This would also work quite well, as I had just removed the front fog lights from the front of the car, and so I may be able to incorporate them here.

The trouble was I had fitted two fog light blanking plates in place of the front fog lights, one of which I had already cut bits out of because it had to allow air to pass through it and into the cold air feed that I had installed behind it!

Luckily I found the perfect LED lights that I needed. They were made by Ring Automotive and at 6" long and in black they seemed ideal, and so I paid my 15 and bought some. That was after I finally found a set where the LEDs appeared to be lined up correctly and the tester button was working so I could check them first!

Having removed my old front fog lights this meant I could very easily wire them in to the fog light circuit, rather than having to install any wiring. Although this would mean that they only come on after the normal lights are already on! Altering the wiring behind the fog light switch, hopefully I would be able to come up with a solution though which would help me to complete my LED Daytime Running Lights.

Finally I Found a Shop with a Pack that Looked OK. But Better than that I Found a Pack on Which the Tester Button Worked! All the LEDs were OK, Hurray!
(Ring Automotive also make some 30 LED Lights for Fitting Inside or Near the Main Headlights, the Tester Buttons on these all worked, but a few Had 3 LEDs Not Working at one End the Strip! ...in Each of the Shops I Visited! Buyer Beware!)

After Removing the Fog Light Blanking Plates from the Car you can see Where I have Cut the Backing Off one of them to Allow Cold Air to Pass Through!
I Have also Cut the Wires Down on the LED Strips and will be connecting these to the Connectors I have cut off the Old Front Fog Lights.

LED's have a Positive and a Negative Side, and so it is Important to Identify which way around the Connectors Should be Wired to them.
The Fog Light Blanking Plates have now Been Cut to fit the LED Lights.

The Wires were Joined, Soldered, Heat Shrinked, and Taped Up.
The LED's were then Stuck in Place using the 3M Double Sided Sticky Pad on the Rear.

Some Car Body Filler was Used on the Rear of the Fog Light Blanking Plates to Hold the Lights Permanently in Place.

Some Expoxy Glue was used Around the Lights to Seal the Tiny Gaps Up Very Neatly.
The LED Daytime Running Lights are now Ready for Fitting.

The lights Were Very Easy to Install, because they Were just Connected Directly to the Old Fog Light Wiring and Switch.
This Means that at the Moment you Have to Switch on the Normal Car Lights and Front Fog Light Switch Before they will Work.

Testing the Wiring!
The Live Wire to the Fog Lights is a Permanent One and so is no Good to Use!
The Cruise Control has a Switched Live (Green/Violet) and so this was Connected to the Positive Side (Red/Yellow Wire) of the Front Fog Light Indicator Light. This then Brought on the LED Daytime Running Lights with the Ignition.
The Circuit Diagrams for the Vehicle were Checked and this Seemed to be a Suitable Connection. Although the front Fog Light Indicator Light Would Now be on Permanently!
The Front Fog Light Switch Itself Would Not Control the LED's, but it Would still be able to Control the Fog Lights in that, if you have Side Lights Switched on, You Can then Press the Front, Then Rear Fog Light Switches to Get the Rear Fog Light on With The Side lights Only. Or, If you Have the Headlights on, You can Use the Rear Fog Lights as Normal. Cruise Control is not Affected Either. We have Also Removed the Front Fog light Relay from the main Fuse Box Under the Car Bonnet, to Prevent Unwanted Current being Draw.
